Performance techniques for piano improvisations by Enrique Granados

Abstract

The beginnings of the twentieth century witnessed the search for new and different concepts in musical creativity, as its composers rejected romantic music, which led to the arrival of new music in terms of vocal resonance and also to multiple trends, which is the music of the twentieth century. Improvisations were among the most prominent methods that appeared during the twentieth century.

Improvisation is a piece of music written for the piano, the purpose of which is to demonstrate the skill and virtuosity of the player. It was developed by both Frederic Chopin (1810-1849) and Franz Schubert (1797-1828) and became an unrelated piece of music, artistically prepared in a melodic style. It appeared in the twentieth century in a free improvisational style. Spanish music began to rise thanks to the continuous efforts of the composer Felipe Pedrell (1841-1922), who established the basic national music through his compositions. His efforts resulted in the emergence of many Spanish composers who achieved wide international fame, such as Enrique Granados, one of the most famous composers and pianists of that time, who wrote many compositions piano.

The research followed the descriptive analytical method for improvisations No. (1) and Al-Samman’s improvisation No. (2) for the piano (the research sample). The applied framework also came and dealt with the analytical study (theoretical and instrumental) of Enrique Granados’ piano pieces and presented the necessary suggestions and instructions to overcome some of the performance difficulties included in those pieces.
