Suggested technical exercises derived from some of “Noseer Shamma's” instrumental compositions for use in playing the Qanun

Abstract

For about three decades, Iraqi musical art has gone through one of the most depleted phases in its long history. This was coupled with the state’s increasing interest in supporting music in a way that had never been seen before, through the establishment of institutes and the introduction of some foreign experts. In the sixties in particular, a promising and authentic renaissance emerged, created by the artists themselves and without any support from the state. Therefore, the researcher chose one of his musical compositions (Tofola) and set the numbers for the Qanun instrument to determine the performance methods and playing techniques that are compatible with the capabilities of the instrument and its vocal range, while suggesting some technical exercises derived from (research sample), through which students of the instrument in similar colleges and institutes can benefit.

The research comprises two parts:

First, the Theoretical Part, which includes:

- Brief about of the musical piece.

- Brief historical about of “Noseer Shamma (1963)”.

- Performance styles and instrumental techniques used in the research sample.

Second, the Applied Part, which includes:

- A detailed instrumental analytical study of the musical piece (Tofola) by “Noseer Shamma”.

- Instrumental analysis with hand numbering.

- Suggested technical exercises derived from the (research sample).

- Research results and reference list, followed by a research summary, then list of supplements
