Abstract

Adult beginners face diverse performance challenges when learning the piano (coordination between the hands, musical expression, rhythm, and finger agility). This study proposes drawing on selected pieces by Kosenko to formulate practical guidelines that alleviate these difficulties.

Research Questions:

• What are the characteristics of music in the Soviet Union and in Ukraine during the first half of the twentieth century.

• What is the biography of Viktor Kosenko, and what are his major works and stylistic features.

• What performance difficulties and techniques appear in Kosenko’s selected pieces, and how can they be addressed through practical guidance.

Objectives:

• Identify the characteristics of Soviet and Ukrainian music in the first half of the twentieth century.

• Provide a concise overview of Kosenko’s life, works, and style.

• Pinpoint performance challenges in a sample of pieces from Op. 25 and propose practical guidelines to address them for adult beginners.

Significance of the Study:

Enhancing adult learners’ piano performance by equipping them with graded, musically rich techniques derived from a highly valued pedagogical repertoire within Ukrainian musical heritage.

Procedures and Methodology:

• Time frame: 2025.

• Location: Faculty of Specific Education – Ain Shams University.

• Method: Descriptive–analytical (content analysis).

• Sample: Four pieces from Children’s Album, Op. 25:


1. Chasing the Butterfly (No. 2)

2. Pastoral / Calm and Flowing (No. 5)

3. Going for a Walk (No. 13)

4. Rain (No. 14)
