Family Education and its Relationship to Citizenship in the Digital Era: A Study of a Sample of Housewives

Abstract

The present study aimed to: investigate the nature of the relationship between family education (across its six aspects) and citizenship in the digital era (across its four aspects), examine the differences among housewives (rural and urban, employed and unemployed) regarding family education and citizenship the digital era across its aspects for a sample of housewives.

The study employed a descriptive -analytical research methodology. The researchers developed two electronic survey instruments: a Family Education Questionnaire and a Digital-Era Citizenship Questionnaire, which were administered to (990) housewives. Participants were required to have children, represent diverse social and economic backgrounds, and be from various governorates of the Arab Republic of Egypt.

The results revealed a statistically significant positive correlation between overall family education (across its six aspects) and overall digital-era citizenship (across four dimensions) at the 0.01 significance level. There are statistically significant differences between rural and urban housewives in overall family education (across its six aspects). There are statistically significant differences in overall digital-era citizenship at the 0.01 significance level, favoring rural housewives.

The study recommended several key interventions, including developing awareness programmes led by psychology professors and home and family relationship specialists to educate housewives about proper family education strategies that foster socially integrated and active children. Organizing seminars and meetings with housewives and their families to train them on digital citizenship principles and how to benefit from the digital era to understand their rights and responsibilities, thereby becoming active community members.
