A comparative study of the style of performing the piano Toccata by Leopold Godowski Jules Massenet and Godowsky

Abstract

toccana is one of the musical compositions written for instruments with keyboards, its composition method relies on imitation between the sounds. toccata combines the improvisational style and the polyphonic texture. We also find that there are many composers who are keen on composing in the toccata form. However, in the twentieth century, the toccana relied on the methods of Multiple techniques in composition. The Tocana for piano, op. 13, by the American composer Potold Godowsky, and the Lucana for piano, by the French composer, by Julius Massenet, are an example of one of the compositions of the twentieth century that includes many condemnatory and expressive techniques, which prompts the researcher to address them with comparative study.

And I swam to benefit from it in developing the ethnic skill of God’s piano learners.The theoretical framework of the research dealt with previous studies related to the subject of the research, then the life of the author Leopold Judowsky, his style, and his most important works for the piano, then the life of the author Julius Massenet, his style, his most important works for the piano, and his overview of the toccata. The research followed the comparative descriptive approach to the piano toccata according to each of the authors (the research sample) as stated The applied framework and the analytical study (theoretical and customary) compared and presented Suggestions and instructions necessary to overcome some of the performance difficulties included in the piano Toccata,The research concluded with the research results, their interpretation, and recommendations.
