The aesthetic effect resulting from the light transmittance of the soft porcelain body

Document Type : Original Article

Abstract

The most important thing that distinguishes porcelain objects, in addition to the thinness of their wall thickness, their light weight, and the whiteness and smoothness of their surface, is the transparency that gives them high value. Perhaps anyone who wants to verify the quality of tableware products made from porcelain objects may conduct a transparency test on it himself by raising the plate in the direction of the light to see it. Light transmittance through the body.

Transparency also has degrees, including simple, medium, and extreme, and what we mean here in our research is the transmittance through which light can penetrate a certain amount of the porcelain body to the extent that enables us to see the light in its different degrees as it passes through and transmits through the porcelain body.

The optical transmittance of porcelain objects has an aesthetic value, and the degree of its transmittance is controlled by two important elements: the raw materials used in the composition of porcelain and the high temperature, as in high-temperature porcelain objects (Hard Porcelain), which reaches 1320 degrees Celsius, and this temperature is only available in large factories. This is not available to most potters, which causes a problem for them that prevents them from their creativity in this field. This made the researcher turn to soft porcelain bodies and find aesthetic solutions for light transmittance through them.
