Main Map Reading Skills for Second Grade in Middle School Students

Abstract

The research aimed to identify the skills of reading the basic maps appropriate for students of the second grade of middle school includes the skills of reading geographical maps five main skills (reading the title of the map - reading the direction of the north - reading the key map including symbols - reading the scale of the map - reading the coordinates) As for the skill of reading the map title, it is a basic skill that shows the user the map what the map talks about is it an agricultural map that includes symbols of different crops, or a map of population distributions that includes symbols of population density, or Weather map and climate distributions, or a political map showing the borders of countries, and the skill of reading the direction of the north always being on the top right of the map and determines four main directions (north, south, east and west) and reading the map key, which includes all the symbols of the map and the skill of reading the scale of drawing the map, and the skill of reading coordinates, latitude and longitude, and the research sample consisted of (100) teachers from the teachers of the second grade of middle school in Minya, who teach Social Studies course for the preparatory stage.

The results showed the appropriateness of the basic geographical map reading skills for the unit (the wealth of our Arab world) in the social studies course for students of the second preparatory grade
