The Use of News Satellite Channels by Egyptian University Students and Its Correlation with Their Future Anxiety

Abstract

The study aimed to investigate the extent of exposure of university students to news satellite channels and its relationship with their future anxiety. This study is classified as a descriptive study as the researcher adopts a descriptive research methodology. The field study was applied to a sample of 400 university students. The sample included students from both public universities (El Minia University and Cairo University) and private universities (Deraya University and Misr University for Science and Technology) representing a diverse range of university types. The most significant findings of the study, as identified by the researcher, were as follows: a high percentage of the sample (64%) occasionally watched news satellite channels, ranking it in the first place in terms of viewership, various reasons were reported by the study sample for following news satellite channels, with "to stay updated about global events" being the most prevalent reason, accounting for 71.3%. In the second place, "knowing the news as it happens with awareness and education" was cited by 56.1% of the participants. "Helping me from my opinions about global issues and crises" came in third place with a percentage of 40.4%. Regarding the favorite news satellite channels of the respondents, Al Jazeera News Channel ranked first with 64.6% of participants selecting it as their preferred channel. In the second place, Al Arabiya Al Hadath was chosen by 52.1% of respondents.
