Abstract

Music in the 19th century was characterized by emotional expression and creative freedom, marking the essence of the Romantic era. During this period, composers focused on emphasizing musical expression and utilizing rich harmonic and rhythmic structures. This era was a natural extension of the classical period and later evolved into the late Romantic style, which is considered a vital bridge toward contemporary musical works. Among the prominent composers of this era was Ludwig Schytte, whose works reflect a spirit of joy and emotional depth.

In the context of previous studies and performance research related to Romantic piano music, this study aims to explore the technical and expressive requirements involved in performing selected pieces from Ludwig Schytte’s Opus 69. This opus includes a variety of short character pieces written in the Romantic style, each presenting distinct challenges in articulation, dynamics, phrasing, and pedaling. The study also seeks to provide pedagogical insights that may benefit piano students at the intermediate level in achieving expressive and stylistically appropriate interpretations.
